Coaching Philosophy

You didn’t get the dog you expected.

Maybe you pictured long walks and quiet evenings, and instead you got barking, pacing, a dog who flinches or freezes or won’t quite let you in. You’ve read the articles, tried the tips, gotten advice from everyone who has an opinion — and you still feel like you’re doing something wrong.

That’s not a training problem. That’s a relationship in crisis.

True healing doesn’t happen through obedience alone. It happens when we address both ends of the leash — behavior, nervous systems, environment, and emotional wellbeing. My work blends trauma-informed dog guidance with steady support for the human walking beside them.

This is the thinking behind everything I do.

🤝 This Isn’t About Obedience — It’s About the Relationship

I’m not here to teach your dog to sit and stay, and I’m not here to hand you a list of commands. What I actually care about is the shift from “I don’t understand this dog” to “I understand this dog, and we’ve become a team.”

That shift is everything. It’s the difference between managing a dog and building a partnership with one. What changed everything with Izzy was never a specific technique — it was the moment I stopped trying to fix her and started trying to understand her.

🌙 Both Ends of the Leash

Your dog’s nervous system and yours are more connected than you think.

I don’t just work with the dog in front of me — I work with the whole partnership. A dog can’t settle if the person holding the leash is anxious, and a person can’t relax if their dog is constantly on edge. Real change happens when both of you learn to co-regulate, together.

💌 Behavior Is Communication, Not Failure

Reactivity isn’t a training failure — it’s a nervous system doing its best to stay safe.

Barking, lunging, freezing, shutting down — none of it means your dog is broken, and none of it means you’re doing something wrong. It means there’s a nervous system underneath the behavior that hasn’t learned it’s safe yet. My approach starts with the why, not just the what.

💛 I Listen Before I Advise

Most of the people who find me have already been given plenty of advice. Everyone has an opinion about your dog — and somehow, none of it has made you feel less alone.

So I don’t start with advice. I start with questions: Tell me about your dog. Tell me what you’re trying to create. Tell me what matters to you. Let’s figure this out together.

What most rescue dog parents actually need isn’t more information — the internet is full of that. What’s harder to find is someone who listens before they tell you what to do.

🌱 Trust Is Built, Not Given

Trust isn’t handed over all at once. It’s built in small, repeated moments — the same way it would be with a person who’d been hurt before.

That’s true for dogs healing from trauma, and it’s true for the humans supporting them. I’m not interested in quick fixes that look good for a week and fall apart under stress. I’m interested in the slow, steady work that actually holds.

🏡 Safety and Predictability Before Skills

Predictability builds safety. Gentle structure, without overwhelm.

Before we work on any specific skill — a recall, a loose leash, calm greetings — we build the foundation underneath it: a nervous system that feels safe enough to learn. Skills built on top of dysregulation don’t last. Skills built on top of safety do.

Closing

This philosophy didn’t come from a textbook. It came from Izzy, from a lot of trial and error, and from finally understanding that what I needed most in my hardest moments wasn’t another training tip — it was someone who listened… and understood.

That’s what I offer now: I’m a relationship coach for rescue dog parents — someone who helps you understand the dog in front of you, understand yourself, and build a relationship that actually works for both of you.

If you’re curious about the teachers and ideas that shaped how I got here, I’ve written about that too — Where My Approach Comes From.

And if you’re wondering what this actually looks like stage by stage — where you and your dog might be right now, and what’s next — that’s what The Healing Together Path walks through.

Where all nervous systems learn to trust.
